The Danger of Familiar Tunes

Each November, as my birthday approaches and the new year draws near, I begin seeking The Father for a word, verse, or focus for the year ahead. I wait expectantly, carrying on with life, trusting that He will reveal His guidance. This year, the answer came early, and has been confirmed multiple times. As we enter 2025, I am compelled to share it with you.

The revelation started with a simple observation. Just as we curate playlists on streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube, Pandora, Tidal, each platform allows us to select artists, sounds, melodies, and rhythms that resonate within. These familiar tunes play on repeat, becoming a constant soundtrack in our lives. Over time, they influence our thoughts, moods, and even our actions.

Then came a sobering warning: “Beware of the familiar tunes with a captivity mindset, for continual conversations are running in the playlist of your mind.” I was stunned. This is an area where I regularly declare the Word over my life, yet in that moment, I felt a new sense of urgency. The next words were clear:

Get in AGREEMENT with:

  • The Word of God and

  • The Call of God about your:

    • Words

    • Actions

    • Reactions

The call to action is twofold:

  1. Boldly declare God’s truths about your identity in Christ.

  2. Pay attention to your thoughts. What you think directly impacts what you say, how you behave (or misbehave), and how you respond. Those looks whether good or bad can speak volumes, friend.

Then there was the question. What are you coming into agreement with right now?

As I reflected on this, I noticed something striking. The acronym for Words, Actions, and Reactions spelled W.A.R.

There is a war raging in our minds over what we choose to focus on. 2 Corinthians 10:5 (ESV) says, "We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ." If a thought is not centered around love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness or self-control (Galatian 5:22-23), it’s time to kick it to the curb!

One morning, fear tried to consume my thoughts and take hold of my body. I paused and reminded myself that fear is simply False Evidence Appearing Real. I went on to remind myself that God had not given me a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). This is what war looks like on the front lines of our daily thought lives.

today’s radiant insight:

“Beware of the familiar tunes with a captivity mindset” Then QUICKLY Get in AGREEMENT with God’s Word, about your Words, Actions, and Reactions. When it smells like stinking thinking, it’s time to take out the trash!
