“Dis” Tries To Win Frequently

I’m still thinking about the Air1 concert I attended at The Ryman in Nashville last week. Calling it a concert underscores the significance of that evening. It also taught me an important lesson about courage.

I was given four free tickets and asked friends and family to join me, but no one’s schedule worked out. For two days, discouragement seemed determined to keep me from going. Yet I felt at peace about attending, even if it meant flying solo on a date night with Jesus. I was ready to go!

Then, on the day of the event, I woke up with the worst pounding headache I’d had in years. I could barely keep my eyes open and felt miserable all day—until about 30 minutes before I drove downtown.

Suddenly, it became clear: I was being “dis-couraged” from going. And what’s the opposite of dis-courage? Courage!

Courage from Jesus and the Holy Spirit's prompting had been there all along. The “dis” tries to win in your life and mine, showing up as:

  • Discouragement

  • Discomfort

  • Disbelief

  • Disobedience

  • Distraction

  • Discord

  • Disqualification

These “dis” lies stem from condemnation, guilt, or shame. But that’s not who you are or how you’re called to live. Refuse to receive those lies!

Choosing courage led to a memorable night of worship beyond “Take Me to Church.” It was a fresh encounter with God’s goodness and great love for us, set to Tauren Wells' songs, anthems of my life.

Courage helps us move past roadblocks to experience the greater things God has for us.

When discouragement comes, press in and discover what’s on the other side when you choose courage. Don’t let the enemy distract you or rob you of God’s best. Instead, be strong and take courage, friend! (Joshua 1:9)
