A Pure Heart: The Key to Seeing God

A pure heart begins by paying attention to what we are thinking about. Our thoughts drive our motives, attitudes, emotions, and nature (mind). After typing those four words, I realized they spell out the acronym M.E.A.N. This reminds us that our thoughts, if left unchecked, are destructive. That’s why it’s so vital to “…bring every thought captive to the obedience of Jesus Christ.” (2 Co. 10:5) “For the heart is deceitful and wicked above all things…” (Jer. 17:9)

Yet, Matthew 5:8 clearly says, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” Thankfully, we get to bring our challenges to God. He helps us with them by removing the worthless things from us while retaining the valuable. We seek purity of heart daily, as we cultivate integrity, moral courage, and Godly character. This isn’t a one-time action or event, rather a continuous process of growth and refinement. God’s offer of “…being transformed and changed from glory to glory…” is VERY appealing. (2 Co. 3:18)

Allowing God to change and purify our hearts brings about the kind blessing and real favor of being pure in heart to where we see and experience God. Now that my friend is REAL FAVOR!

Tangible Ways to be Pure in Heart

  • Seek God’s presence by spending time talking with Him.

  • Guard thoughts by thinking on what is pure, lovely, and of good report (Phil 4:8).

  • Be honest, even when it’s difficult or inconvenient to speak the truth in love.

  • Repent quickly and sincerely when mistakes are made.

  • Serve others humbly and with the right motives.
